Philip J. A. Ryan, M.D., is a board-certified physician with over 40 years of clinical experience in treating the entire spectrum of Endocrine conditions ranging in ages from children to adults. He is the Principal Physician of DELC INC.
Dr. Ryan completed his undergraduate studies at Harvard College in 1971, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Biochemistry. In 1976, he graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine. Then in 1979, he finished the residency program in Internal Medicine at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis, IN.
Later, Dr. Ryan returned to his home state of Massachusetts to study at the world-renowned Joslin Diabetes Center (affiliated with Harvard Medical School). At Joslin, he was named Chief Fellow, and completed his Fellowship in Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Diabetes in 1981. Returning to Indianapolis, Dr. Ryan started a private practice and subsequently was asked to serve as Medical Director of the first and largest Joslin Diabetes Affiliate in the country.
In 2003, Dr. Ryan was recruited to be the first Endocrinologist in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia to treat the Diabetes epidemic. Currently, he has an appointment as Assistant Professor at West Virginia University School of Medicine.
Dr. Ryan has performed extensive work regarding Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusions (CSII), Glucose Meter, Diabetes Blind Meter, and Implantable Insulin Pump. Dr. Ryan has presented original research at The Endocrine Society and American Diabetes Association.
He is an active member of The Endocrine Society, American Diabetes Association, National Lipid Association, West Virginia State Medical Association, and Eastern Panhandle Medical Society.
Dr. Ryan is married to media producer Katherine Walsh Ryan. They have two children: Lindsay, a domain architect; and Elliott, a writer.
Mary Hartshorn, RD, LD, CDE, is a dietitian with 20 years of clinical experience. She is the Diabetes Education and Nutrition Counselor for DELC INC.
After earning a Bachelor of Science in Health Education from West Virginia University, Mrs. Hartshorn became a registered dietitian in 1977.
Mrs. Hartshorn has worked as a clinical dietitian throughout the United States for more than 20 years. In 2005, Mrs. Hartshorn became a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) and began working with DELC INC in her role as Diabetes Education and Nutrition Counselor.
In addition to her work with Dr. Ryan, Mrs. Hartshorn has served as an Outpatient Nutritional Counselor (17 years), Dialysis Center Dietitian (12 years), Nursing Home Dietitian (10 years), and WIC Dietitian (3 years).
As the founding owner of Dietetic Consulting Services, LLC, (2010 – present), Mrs. Hartshorn also operates as a Consultant Dietitian for the Hospice of the Panhandle, Free Clinic, KD Court, and Meals on Wheels.
Mrs. Hartshorn is married to Rev. Thomas Hartshorn. They have three children: Holly, Joel, and Mark. The Hartshorns are blessed with four grandchildren.
